Oyamo Island Toilet Project

OUR CONCERN

Bondo Community Development Network is a youth managed Community Based Organization working on environmental conservation and poverty reduction programmes in Bondo Constituency, western region of Kenya. The organization was established in April, 2013 and works in 25 sub-locations in Bondo.
Oyamo Island Toilet Project campaign responds to dire need of toilet structures for fishermen families living in Oyamo Island. Our visit to the Island in 2012 exposed a worrying trend where one side of this beautiful Island is used as open air latrine. The families here hide behind rocks for long calls while short calls can be done anywhere even in public places. This exposes the entire Oyamo community to waterborne diseases and unhealthy environment.
We are strong believers in environmental conservation and human health; hence, the situation on Oyamo Island calls for our quick response.

What We Need & What You Get

We have a low target of $ 2,500 just enough to buy few portable toilets that we will use to train our beneficiaries on how to manage and sustain portable toilets in an Island situation where pit latrines are discouraged.
By donating to this project you emerge as a true friend to the environment since human waste will no longer be washed into Lake Victoria any time it rains in Oyamo Island. Additionally; we will honour your generosity by sending you a gift as a reward meant for our "friends of the environment volunteers".
We do hope to meet our target but should we fall short of $ 2,500 then we will organize internal fundraising to acquire the remaining amount to enable us successfully implement the project.

The Impact

Oyamo Island Toilet Project is a positive move to ensure the fishermen families solely depending on fishing and fish trade, have a healthy environment and enjoy good health.
The water level in Oyamo Island is so close to the land surface hence sinking of pit latrines is highly discouraged lest the Island sinks. We do therefore;believe that properly managed portable toilets is the best alternative to pit latrines and unhygienic open air latrines currently visible on one half of the Island.
Setting up this project in Oyamo Island will be of great benefit to lives dependant on Lake Victoria both in Kenya and other neighbouring countries. It will drastically reduce polution of the lake water and creates an attractive picture of the Island which has a high tourism potential and rich in Luo culture and Kenya's history.

Other Ways You Can Help

You can share this information with the rest of the world and help us in fundraising.
You can be a member of Bondo Community Development Network or volunteer with us on environmental and poverty reduction programmes.
You can also become our life donor by contributing monthly to sustain our work.
